Introducing the DogtorRx Gonadectomy / LH Pilot Study

Launched in collaboration with Dr. Gerald Buchoff, DVM, we invite fellow AHVMA veterinarians to participate in an exploratory clinical initiative investigating luteinizing hormone (LH) in spayed and neutered dogs and cats.

Following gonadectomy, removal of the ovaries or testes eliminates important hormonal feedback mechanisms, often resulting in persistently elevated LH concentrations.

Emerging veterinary research suggests that sustained LH elevation may influence tissues and organs beyond the reproductive system. Our pilot study seeks to investigate whether Age Defense Extra Strength is associated with measurable changes in LH test results over a 30-day observation period.

Why Elevated LH Deserves Veterinary Attention

Published research has identified several potential long-term health concerns associated with gonadectomy and possible LH-mediated effects:

• Thyroid and endocrine health: Potential relationships involving hypothyroidism and altered endocrine signaling.
• Joint and ligament health: Associations between gonadectomy and increased cranial cruciate ligament injury risk, with LH receptor activity under investigation.
• Cognitive and neurological health: Possible relationships involving age-related cognitive and behavioral changes.
• Metabolic health: Associations involving weight gain, obesity, and metabolic regulation.
• Urinary health: Potential relationships with urinary incontinence and lower urinary tract function.
• Cancer biology: Laboratory research investigating LH receptor activity in lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma cells.

Important: These are research areas, not established adverse effects caused directly by elevated LH. Additional studies are needed to determine causality and clinical significance.

AHVMA Members: Join Our 30-Day LH Pilot Study

Participation is open to all interested veterinary practices caring for gonadectomized dogs and cats, including clinics that do not perform spaying or neutering procedures themselves.

Whether your practice performs gonadectomy or provides ongoing care to dogs and cats sterilized elsewhere, you may have eligible patients who can contribute valuable observations.

Proposed Pilot Protocol

1. Identify an eligible patient: Select a previously spayed or neutered dog, with veterinary assessment and owner consent.
2. Establish baseline LH status*: Collect a serum sample and perform an LH test before supplementation. * This is not a must as LH levels are typically high after gonadectomy.
3. Administer Age Defense Extra Strength: The proposed regimen is 2 x 1 capsule twice daily for 30 consecutive days, subject to the supervising veterinarian’s approval and the finalized study protocol.
4. Repeat LH testing on Day 30: Use the Zoetis WITNESS Rapid LH Test or another validated canine LH testing method, consistently applied.
5. Document and share findings: Record the patient’s age, breed, sex, weight, gonadectomy history, baseline and follow-up results, and any observed changes or adverse events.

The Zoetis WITNESS LH Test provides qualitative results around a 1 ng/mL threshold. Quantitative laboratory testing is preferable when the objective is to measure the magnitude of LH changes.

The study is exploratory. Age Defense Extra Strength has not yet been demonstrated to reduce LH levels or prevent LH-associated diseases.
